We have been using a Tomsgates dog door for our dog Tommie for over two years now and are very satisfied. The door is solid, durable and still works perfectly despite daily use. Tommie enjoys using his Tomsgates.
Reliable company with good service.
We offer three painted finishes and one unpainted natural version.
The painted doors are finished with Hydrolux from Anker Stuy. This is a transparent coating that protects the wood against moisture, mould and discolouration and gives it a contemporary look. Clean with detergent and, after many years, simply refresh with our maintenance kit.
Transparent paint is the most popular option. The beautiful grain of the wood remains visible, and the transparent film does not turn yellow.
Grey transparent paint goes with everything. The wood grain remains slightly visible through the grey oil.
Painted white transparent, the wood grain remains visible. The white oil with the wood grain creates a very beautiful effect!
The natural version of our doors is not painted but completely ready to paint: assembled, sanded and dusted.
Looking for a black cat door, a varnished dog door, a white high-gloss finish, lacquered or stained to match your windows and doors? You can use any paint, oil, stain, etc. for outdoor use. This is the most economical choice.
Tip: painting the door on a workbench before installation is much more convenient than painting it once it has been installed.
It is only when your door is being installed in the wall, once the hole in the wall has been made, that the wall thickness can be precisely measured. That is why we supply a tunnel that is too long, so that it can be shortened to the correct wall thickness during installation.
To order your wall door, all you need to know is the approximate wall thickness at a window or door:
Is the wall even thicker, or do you need a longer tunnel? Then please contact us. Is your wall less than 15 cm thick? Then take a look at our pet flaps for installatio n in doors which are suitable for walls and panels up to 15 cm thick.
We manufacture our dog flaps and cat flaps for doors or windows from rubberwood or European oak. Both are sustainable types of wood, sourced from responsibly managed forestry.
Rubberwood is the wood from rubber trees that have become too old to produce rubber and are replaced by young trees. It is light beige in colour, has a beautiful pattern and is smooth. It is a popular wood type in contemporary Danish design. Rubberwood is the most popular and economical option.
The European oak we use is dark and grained, full of character. It’s a popular choice for any furniture, windows and doors.
Both are durable types of wood. When used outdoors, the wood must be protected to ensure it remains attractive for a long time. You can choose the painted finish or finish the natural version yourself with a protective coating against moisture, mould, etc.
Dark & grained or light & smooth? It is therefore mainly a matter of choosing the finish that you think looks best in your home for this dog and cat door in the door or in glass!
We can install the door for you in Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and California (USA).
Do you live in Belgium and are you eligible for the reduced VAT rate of 6% instead of 21%? Installation in a wall will then cost an additional 295 euros on top of what you would pay if you only purchased the pet flap at 21% VAT. When ordering, you will pay the full 21% VAT, but immediately after installation, you will be refunded the excess amount paid.
The Nipper (S) cat door is suitable for standard domestic cats, known as European shorthairs.
As well, this door is intended for dogs with a shoulder height of up to 13.8 inches (35 cm) such as the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, French Bulldog, King Charles Spaniel, Maltese, Pug, Schipperke, Brison Frisé, Chihuahua, …
For pets that are larger or smaller, we also have other sizes available, so there is always a door that fits perfectly.
Put your cat or dog in another room and leave the door open for 8.23″ (21 cm), which is the width of the door opening. If they can come to you without having to push the door further open, you’re good to go.
You can also measure your dog’s shoulder height. The door has a passage height of 9.61″ (24,4 cm) and is placed approximately 3.9″ (10 cm) above the ground. Does your dog have a shoulder height of approximately 13.8″ (35 cm) or less? Then this is the right door for your dog!
In doubt? Give your dog or cat the benefit of the doubt and choose a size larger!
Passage
8.23″ wide x 9.61″ high
20,9 cm wide x 24,4 cm high
Installation
3.9″ (10 cm) from the floor
Frame included
11.85″ wide x 13.23″ high
30,1 cm wide x 33,6 cm high
Tomsgates pet doors are indeed an investment. You will see the return on your energy bill and you will enjoy them for a long time because they are made from quality materials by skilled craftsmen in Belgium.
Now you have the comfort of a door that closes properly, is secure, doesn’t make any noise, and looks great.
The flaps of the Tomsgates cat and dog doors are made of soft rubber that closes draught-free.
The wooden slats on the flaps are essential for keeping the soft rubber in shape for years to come! These wooden slats also ensure that the flap never feels cold to the touch. This patented flap is unique to Tomsgates!
And if the wind really gets too strong, there is a solid wooden closing door that comes standard with every door.
Then your pet door is shut tight.
Every cat door and dog door comes with a 2 cm thick solid wood night door that locks securely with a steel lock. You can rest assured: this door keeps your pet safely inside and also protects against burglary.
By using wood on the flap, our cat door or dog door is also less noticeable in your door or wall than a transparent plastic door.
At our production facility in Belgium, planks arrive and carefully finished pet doors leave. Designed and manufactured in-house from start to finish.
Since 2014, we have been delivering in 39 countries. But if you have any questions, please feel free to ask Ivan, the creator of Tomsgates doors and owner of the company. We guarantee this service with your purchase!
Amazing company, beautiful product. It is indeed a bit more expensive than the usual cheap cat doors, but I really think it will last a lifetime. My cats both enjoyed using it the first night it was installed.
I also had a small problem with my order, but Ivan solved it immediately for me, great customer service.

Our first little door dates from about seven years ago.
Fast installation, friendly service, ingenious system, our cat needed exactly two tries, afterwards 👍
When renovating the house, we chose this system again, also aesthetically nice and very easy for our kitty.
Super!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Fast, very friendly installer! Not so satisfied with the finishing and made a new appointment on our own initiative!
Our dog is very happy with it, for our cat it still takes some practice. The dog door is in our kitchen and you don’t feel ANY draft even on very cold days! Super satisfied!!
Great service, your questions are perfectly answered by helpful people who know what they are talking about.
High quality products that are shipped neatly packaged. Easy to install. Definitely recommended!

After six years of use the dog door is still in perfect condition. Since my dogs can go in and out freely all day the door is used very intensively. Apparently the door is indestructible. I have a large door because both my German shepherd and my dachshund have to use it.
Even a full grown Bernese mountain dog passes through it without any problems.

I really wanted to thank you for Motsi’s dog door! My husband nearly had a stroke when I told him how much I had spent on it, but now he is truly converted. It is quiet, draft proof and for a fox terrier who is afraid of EVERYTHING. We have had it for almost a year now and it is the best one we have ever had. ❤️

Our painted pet doors are fully finished and protected, ready for immediate installation.
The natural version of our dog and cat doors is ready to paint: assembled, sanded and dusted. You can use any paint, oil, stain, etc. for outdoor use. There is no need to dismantle it; simply cover the rubber and metal parts with masking tape. To enjoy your door for many years to come, use a product that provides good protection for the wood. There are many good products available on the market for this purpose.
Tip: painting the pet door on a workbench before installation is more convenient than painting it once it has been installed.
And of course, we are always delighted to receive photographs of your work of art.
Use the supplied installation template to mark the hole in the wall. Consider how you want to secure the door in the wall: for example, if you want to inject 1 cm of polyurethane foam around the edge, add this to the installation opening.
First, make the hole on the inside. If you need to move anything because of a hidden pipe, you will not have made an opening in the façade yet. After all, an interior wall is much easier to repair than a façade.
The tunnel for your door through the wall can only be made to size once the hole in the wall has been made. This is because you can only then measure the exact thickness of the wall.
The supplied tunnel comes with instructions on how to customise it. The saw cut you make will be concealed by an aluminium profile, so it will be completely invisible afterwards.
A draught-free pet door for installation in a wall must also be fitted in a draught-free manner. On the inside, ensure that the opening between the tunnel of the door and the wall is properly sealed. This can be done with PU foam, insulation wool, etc.
On the outside, it is important to prevent water from entering. You will see that the frame already has a foam strip to make it windproof, but this does not keep out moisture. A good silicone seal is ideal for waterproofing the connection between the frame of the door and the wall.
Cleaning
To wash your wooden dog door and cat door, use water with a household detergent. You can use a washing-up brush or even a nail brush if your dog or cat leaves grease on the door that is difficult to remove.
Maintenance kit
And if the protection on your door becomes a little worn after many years, ask us for a maintenance kit. First wash it thoroughly, then sand it lightly and finally apply a thin layer of protective paint to ensure it will last for many more years. How often should this be done? That depends on where the door is located: in full sun, wind and rain it will need to be done more often than if it is protected. Just keep an eye on it when the protection starts to wear thin.
Service enquiries
Have you noticed anything unusual about your door? Please contact us immediately. Send us a photo so we can see what the problem is. We have been making doors since 2014, so someone else has undoubtedly asked us your question before.
Absolutely! Just send us some pictures of where you want the door put and we’ll let you know if there’s anything we need to be aware of. Make sure you take photos inside and outside, and from far enough away so that you can see all the details.
The flap of this cat or dog flap cannot tear at the attachement point due to wear and tear. We guarantee free replacement for 5 years, because it will never happen anyway. That’s because we have developed a unique mounting system.
And if the cat or dog does manage to destroy the flap, replacement is very easy: at the top, the flap is held in place by an aluminium holder that is secured to the frame with a few screws. If you unscrew these screws, the flap comes loose and you can replace it with the new flap.
We have developed our dog and cat doors with particular attention to ease of installation in doors, glass and panels. This means that a specialist installer is not required, making the installation of our doors an ideal project for a local handyman or woman. A sturdy cardboard installation template is included as standard, and you will find Tips & Tricks and Instructions on this page.
The hole in the wall can indeed be closed up again. It will take a professional two half-days to do the job: first, the structural work to brick up the hole, and then a few days later to finish it off. If you are selling your house, the door may be an added attraction for dog or cat lovers. So be sure not to have it removed beforehand.
There is a flap on the inner wall and on the outer wall with a tunnel between them. It appears dark in the tunnel, but when passing through, one of the two flaps is always slightly open, allowing light to enter.
One of the things that makes our doors stand out is the non-transparent flap. You’ll need to show your dog or cat how to use it (check out the 3-step training for more info), but for a cat that’s not used to it, it’s not that clear how to find the door on its own and open it to get into a strange ‘nest’.
This has been working for thousands of customers since 2014 in 39 countries.
Indeed, during installation, we make the hole through the wall ourselves: with minimal dust and using professional equipment. Then we install the door in the wall, seal it to make it wind and watertight, and take the debris away with us.
Pipes in the wall run vertically upwards and downwards from sockets, switches, taps, light points, etc. The drains from toilets, washbasins and rainwater from upper floors also run vertically in the wall. So do not place your door below or above sockets, switches, taps, light fixtures, etc., but as far away from them as possible. And if you have a device for detecting pipes, turn on the light and plug something into the socket, as the wall scanner will work better on a pipe that is using electricity.
Finally, feel free to send us photos of the wall if you would like advice.
For the height of the installation of your cat flap or dog flap, take into account the floor inside.
That’s no problem, because our doors have a sturdy tunnel that ensures your insulation stays in place in the wall. Is it soft insulation or, for example, Isomo pellets? Then we recommend first drilling a few holes in the wall where the door is to be installed and spraying PU foam into the wall to secure the pellets. Then you can make the hole in the wall with confidence, without the insulation coming out.
Chip systems don’t guarantee the lifespan we’re expecting for our cat and dog doors. But don’t worry if you were looking for a cat flap with chip recognition, our doors have some special features that mean you might not even need a chip system. You can read all about it in this article.
Our warranty lasts for two years and we’ll always be there for you even after that. We never leave our customers behind! Any material problems will probably show up pretty quickly during the first few months anyway.
Even better, if the flap tears due to wear and tear after two years, we’ll replace it free of charge for the first five years. We’re happy to promise this, as it will never be necessary anyway! ;-)
You can come and check out our products at our factory in Duffel (Belgium), but that might not be the best option if you don’t live nearby. To make things easier, we’ve got a returns service: if the product doesn’t meet your expectations, you can return it for free. We’re happy to offer this service because the doors are never returned anyway ;-)
